Planning your project

Electrical project checklist

Use this worksheet from the first site visit through the final walkthrough.

Before the estimate

  • Describe the issue or goal

Record affected rooms, equipment, symptoms, and the result you want.

  • Collect useful details

Have equipment model numbers, panel location, building age, and photos ready if available.

  • Explain access

Point out finished walls, attic or basement access, outdoor routes, and parking constraints.

  • Ask about credentials

Confirm licensing and insurance with the appropriate local authority and the business.

Before work begins

  • Approve a written scope

Identify included materials, labor, site restoration, exclusions, schedule, and payment terms.

  • Confirm permit responsibility

Ask whether permits and inspection apply and who will arrange them. For City of St. Louis addresses, see the City’s electrical permit guidance.

  • Set the site plan

Agree on access, work hours, power interruptions, pets, cleanup, and where materials can be placed.

  • Document changes

Decide how added work and price changes will be approved before the work proceeds.

At completion

  • Review the finished scope

Walk through the installed work with the electrician and compare it with the agreement.

  • Ask for a demonstration

Have the electrician explain controls, labeling, and any routine care for new equipment.

  • Collect records

Keep the final invoice, product information, warranty, and inspection documentation where applicable.

  • Record follow-up items

Put incomplete work or corrections and the expected resolution date in writing.
